North Dakota Nice, Part Two

I just have to gush again.

Since we don’t have a snowblower we shovel our driveway and sidewalks. Our neighbors on either side of us both have snowblowers. At least four times this winter they have attacked the snow in our driveway before we could get to it with the shovel…the latest incident was this morning, and I feel very grateful to live next to people like that.

That’s the North Dakota nice that I see.

Changes For North Dakota Ambassador Web Site

The North Dakota Ambassador web site, www.LuvND.com has undergone some changes. Now it includes a member’s section that will allow ND ambassadors to share news, submit business leads, blog about great North Dakota things, look for jobs in North Dakota, etc. This may be something fun to browse through and perhaps try out.

North Dakota Sanitation Workers Out In Snow

I’m sure that’s not surprising to anyone, but I have to admit I’m grateful. I struggled to get two very full garbage cans down to the curb this morning in another new layer of snow. It’s soft and beautiful but very cold and I’m sure it’s no fun to work in…so thanks to all the brave North Dakota sanitation workers!

I’ve heard about North Dakota nice but never considered it quite the way that John Irby put it in his latest column. He asks whether North Dakota is too nice, and whether the niceness of people here gets in the way of justice.

North Dakota Music

After a twelve-hour day, the last thing I wanted to do was go to a junior-high band concert–but there I was, and believe it or not, I thoroughly enjoyed it. The concert was entertaining, the children were brilliant and the music was energizing. I couldn’t have picked a better way to spend the evening. North Dakota has some truly talented musicians, both for performing and for leading (and teaching).

When I got home, I realized I had still time to browse the headlines. I found this link at Bismarck Tribune’s site to a completely different set of North Dakota bands, and I thought I should share.

One More Christmas Thought

On December 7 (tomorrow) the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is hosting an open house in their newly-remodeled meeting house. The open house starts at 6:00 p.m. At 7:00 p.m., the First Presidency’s Christmas devotional will be broadcast into the chapel.

The meeting house is located on Country West Road in Bismarck, just west of the Bismarck Temple (that beautiful white building, also owned by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints).

Christmas Trees At The North Dakota Capitol Building

When I was at the North Dakota Capitol building on Thursday, the large Christmas tree near Gov. Hoeven’s office was as yet undecorated. I undertand that this tree is decorated with handmade ornaments–from school children all the way through true pieces of art from well-known crafters. I can’t help but love it.

A floor below is another gallery of Christmas trees sponsored by groups ranging from Capitol Cloggers to the state insurance department. In one corner sits a table for donations to Carrie’s Kids.

I know even Christmas time can be busy at the Capitol, but it’s so nice to see the Christmas trees there. It makes the building feel very warm and friendly.

Elf Yourself

Office Max has their Elf Yourself program online again this year. It’s easy and a lot of fun. The program allows you to upload photos and then places the faces as heads of dancing elves. This year there’s the Charleston, Country and Disco dances as well as the Classic dance from last year. It takes a few minutes but it’s well worth the laugh–check it out here.

I just came across another really great web site about southwestern North Dakota–the Strom Center Blog.

The site is affiliated with the Strom Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation in Dickinson, ND. It aims at true economic development and appears to use a series of programs like E-Scholars and Home Town Competitiveness. This sounds like a blog to watch.
