According to this Bismarck Tribune column by reporter Brian Gehring, some North Dakota spots were ranked fairly high for hunting and fishing in a 2000 issue of Outdoor Life.

Although I enjoy spending time outdoors, I’m not a hunter and not really a fisher; I can’t say firsthand whether the stories are true.

What I do know is that there are several people who agree with this perspective. During an article I wrote a few years ago, I talked with a few people who came clear from Arizona to hunt. This past October, we had family visit because they wanted to come hunting here.

I can think of two people who really know what’s going on with outdoor sports in North Dakota: Doug Leier with North Dakota Outdoors and Redneck Goon. Check out their sites for more info…although at the moment, the presidential election seems to be a higher priority than hunting and fishing.

An AP article by Dale Wetzel brings to light some of the issues surrounding North Dakota’s ban of the sale of hunting rights separate from the land itself.

According to the article, Some legislators believe that hunting rights should never be sold without the property because it makes it difficult to determine who has rights to the land in future years, which could make it hard to sell the real estate or find solutions to legal problems. Others believe that while it may be a bad practice, the government shouldn’t dictate what landowners can and can’t do with their land.

From the article:

North Dakota is the only state known to ban selling the right to hunt on property separately from the land itself, and some question whether the restriction is fair or legal.

This was a big issue in the past legislative session. As I remember it, the practice was temporarily banned while a legislative committee studied it. The question for the upcoming legislative session is whether or not the ban will be made permanent.

We’ve got some intelligent folks in office. I’m sure it will be a lively debate with good points made on both sides–definitely an issue to watch.

Logging Camp Ranch is located in one of the most beautiful wooded areas of the state. It’s worth a visit even if you’re not a hunter.

An article published in the Bismarck Tribune today announces the birth of a THIRD white buffalo in the National Buffalo Museum herd at Jamestown, North Dakota.

The first, a female albino named White Cloud, was born in 1996 in Michigan and moved to the herd in Jamestown. In 2007, White Cloud gave birth to another white buffalo, a male named Dakota Miracle.

The new white calf was born Saturday to a brown bison in the same herd. I strongly recommend reading the entire article. It’s fascinating.

A fun history of white buffalo and their importance can be found here. White Cloud is included in the article, but Dakota Miracle and the new calf aren’t.

North Dakota’s tourism division has a page devoted to Dakota Miracle and White Cloud. I assume they’ll have one shortly for the new calf, as well. In this case, the North Dakota Tourism Division’s branding strategy, LEGENDARY, seems tailor-made.
