KX News has posted an article and video of the first phase of dropping Bismarck’s old Memorial Bridge into the Missouri River.  The first of three detonations occured this morning at 10:00 a.m.

I’ve heard the old Memorial Bridge described many ways.  One friend always called it the Erector Set bridge because it looked like her son’s Erector Set toys.  My own daughters called it ‘The Three-Lumped Bridge.’  To this point, it has been a constant in the ever-changing Bismarck.  That alone has given it sentimental value to the people of Bismarck and Mandan.

But the new bridge is great, and we’re going to love that one, too.

We always used to call it “The Singing Bridge” because of the weird high-pitched sound it would make (before they paved over the metal grating, anyway).

It’s too bad they couldn’t fix it. I have a lot of fond memories of that bridge from my childhood. We lived only a couple blocks from it.
