I first came across information on the Writing Rock about a year ago in a handout I picked up at the Heritage Center in Bismarck.  Writing Rock State Historic Site consists of two boulders with ancient petroglyphs, includng petroglyphs of the Thunderbird.

The site is located 14 1/2 miles northeast of Grenora, North Dakota, almost as far northwest as you can go and still be in the state.  For those who are interested in the Bakken oil formation area and come here to visit, this may be a fun side trip.

That reminds me of Solberg Butte – I’ve found writings on there back to 1903, and some older ones may have existed but faded. Type in “Solberg Butte” in the Search box on bismarckmandanblog.com to see some photos.

There’s also the notorious “Regan Rock” – which I’ve recently located and marked in my GPS – but I don’t have photos from there…yet.
