This article was published in 1908.  The hairy wild man described (could he be a bigfoot or saskwatch?) was seen near Velva, North Dakota.

Here’s more on the reported bigfoot sightings on the Fort Berthold reservation.

For something more historical, take a look at this article describing a yearly ceremonial ride for a group of Lakota people following the route of Chief Big Foot.

Although I hope bigfoot exists, the Velva story was made up. The hairy wild man you make reference to was called a wild boy. If my memory serves me correctly, the local druggist concocted the story and claimed the wild boy had been captured and held captive in the basement of his drug store. Although the story was eventually picked up by daily newspapers across the state, the whole thing was nothing more than a joke.

I know all this because I lived in Velva for seven years and am the author of the Dakota Mysteries & Oddities(TM)book series.
