A gas leak on Collins Avenue in Mandan, North Dakota early Sunday morning left several residents without heat.  But it was a fairly nice day, with lots of sunshine and relatively warm temperatures for this time of year.

Around 4:00 p.m., Gov. John Hoeven dedicated state resources to help fix the problem.  The leak was fixed yesterday but, according to a family friend living in the affected area, utility workers have to relight the pilot lights in every home and building in the area.  More than 5,000 people have been impacted by this gas leak.

As an added twist, Mandan Schools are closed today, despite last night’s plans to have the schools opened.  This means a fun day for me (and I really mean it).  I have four elementary school children here.  We ARE going to do some school work, but I’m looking forward to a very fun day.

As an interesting side note, the KX News site has articles on the gas leak, including one on the emergency shelter the Red Cross set up at the Eagle’s building and one on the leak’s impact on Bismarck’s Lowe’s.  Apparently, they’re selling out of electric space heaters.

My parents’ house in south Mandan was originally built with electric baseboard heat. We used a wood burning furnace for many years, then switched to a natural gas unit. But they never took out the electric baseboard heat, a decision that made them very thankful during the gas leak situation!
