Sunset over the Missouri River

Sunset over the Missouri River

I found this photo this morning while I was trying to clean out some of my computer files.  I took it about a week ago when my family and I took a walk down by the Missouri River for Family Night.  It’s a great place for skip-racing (I’m definitely not as fast as my children) and an even better place for a leisurely walk.

I always wanted to find that trail and go down it.  It’s on the west side of the river between Bismarck and Mandan.  You can see parts of it from I-94, but most of it is hidden by trees.  We’ve seen wild turkeys down there a few times as we’ve driven by.  Sometimes we see deer, too.

I noticed that bismarckmandanblog.com also posted about this trail on September 29.

The best way to walk this trail is to leave a car at either end. The trailhead on the north end is easiest to find: turn off I-94 by Bonanza, follow the road all the way around and under I-94, then take the first right on the gravel road.

The south end isn’t much more tricky, just well hidden. Take the McKenzie Drive exit from the Expy, go back around past Moritz and under the Memorial Bridge. Take the first left and follow it until it ends. There’s a little place to park at the trailhead. It’s private property but the signs indicate that trail users are welcome.

This is a beautiful trail and open year ’round, as it’s popular with cross country skiers.
