Rainy Day Football
Published by gwen September 8th, 2007 in North Dakota People, Uncategorized.Today was one of those sleepy gray days when all you want to do is curl up in a soft fuzzy blanket by the window and watch the world turn green. I woke to the sound of rain on the roof. It drizzled through most of the morning. By the time I left the house, a small stream had formed in the gutter across the street.
But the world doesn’t stop for rain, and neither does football. I joined my neighbor and about four dozen other people for the first part of a third-grade flag-football game. Most everyone was decked out in rain coats and had umbrellas. There I was, slipping across the grass in canvas shoes and no jacket, while parents and siblings and grandparents yelled encourgement at the kids on the field. Passion for football seems to be alive and well in North Dakota.
I have never been a football enthusiast in even in dry weather, but it was fun. Fun enough, even in the rain, that I’ll probably go to the next game. It was a glimpse into a world we rarely travel in, and it impacted the whole day: my daughters even made football shaped cookies this afternoon.
